چکیده

We present new results of a survey for weak magnetic fields among DA white dwarfs with inclusion of some brighter hot subdwarf stars. We have detected variable circular polarization in the Hα line of the hot subdwarf star Feige 34 (SP: sdO). From these data, we estimate that the longitudinal magnetic field of this star varies from −1.1 ± 3.2 kG to +9.6 ± 2.6 kG, with a mean of about +5 kG and a period longer than 2 h. In this study, we also confirm the magnetic nature of white dwarf WD1105-048, found earlier in a study by Aznar Cuadrado et al. (2004), and present upper limits of kilogauss longitudinal magnetic fields of 5 brightest DA white dwarfs. Our data support the finding of Aznar Cuadrado et al. (2004) that ∼ 25% of white dwarfs have kilogauss magnetic fields. This frequency also confirms results of early estimates obtained using the magnetic field function of white dwarfs (Fabrika & Valyavin 1999).

Utilizing the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) Second Incremental Data Release Catalog, we have retrieved near-IR magnitudes for several hundred hot subdwarfs (sdO and sdB stars) drawn from the Catalogue of Spectroscopically Identified Hot Subdwarfs (Kilkenny, Heber, & Drilling 1988, 1992). This sample size greatly exceeds that of previous studies of hot subdwarfs. Examining 2MASS photometry a...

We report new results for the elemental and isotopic abundances of the normally rare elements mercury and platinum in HgMn stars. Typical overabundances can be 4 dex or more. The isotopic patterns do not follow the fractionation model of White et al (1976).

We present the first far-red spectra of the L subdwarf 2MASS J16262034+3925190 and the late M/early L subdwarf 2MASS J16403197+1231068. We confirm the ultracool subdwarf nature of these objects. 2M1626+3925 shows strong K I absorption, like an L4 dwarf, and is very similar to, but hotter than, the late L subdwarf 2MASS J05325346+8246465. It is unambiguously an L subdwarf. 2M1640+1231 is very si...

We present a new way of modeling turbulent thermonuclear deflagration fronts in Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarfs, consisting of carbon and oxygen, undergoing a type Ia supernova explosion. Our approach is a front capturing/tracking hybrid scheme, based on a level set method, which treats the front as a mathematical discontinuity and allows for full coupling between the front geometry and the flo...
